About the Paulownia in general

These Paulownia species (Elongata, Shan tong, Catalpifolia, Shan dong) are a result of several years of cross-fertilization experiment from Paulownia species in laboratory. The result is a disease-free, very fast growing (2-3 meters per year) hybrid which can be planted even in extreme climatic provinces. Its frost tolerance is up to -15 or -29 degrees. It makes a high quality wood.

It improves the efficiency of agricultural production and prevents further soil degradation. It is appropriate to put agricultural plants among the trees. Experiments have shown approximately 30% increase in the crop average available in the area.

These kinds of the Emperor's Tree can survive among extreme precipitation patterns (500-3000 mm/year). The fastest growing tree in the world, by the age of 7-8 it is practically ready to cut down, and by this time a trunk gives about 0.6 to 1 cubic metres of timber. After felling, the tree re-sprouts from the stump, so there are no re-planting expenses. In the age of 13 it has approximately 0,44 m trunk diagonal at breast height.

With its big foliage it contributes to the micro-and macro-climate regulation, increases humidity, and decreases the risk of wind and soil erosion, reduces the soil-drying power of the wind. As a forest, in the age of 4 years it can bind 800 tons of carbon dioxide and 48 tons of dust per year, and produces 580 tons of oxygen. Carbon dioxide absorption capacity = 12 tons of CO2/ha.

It's knot-free wood can be utilized in several areas:

• firewood

• furniture

• shipbuilding

• construction

• instrument making

In addition, its wood is light, well-bendable, flexible, paintable, can be versatile. It has a thin rind, dries quickly so it can be well processed. The wood contains 75% of wood cellulose and 21-23% lignin. It does not warp, does not absorb moisture, has a high degree of fire resistance. Due to its high calorific value, precious pellets and briquettes can be made of it. At 13% moisture content, the calorific value of 1 kg briquettes is 18,828 MJ.

It is relatively fireproof, flash point 477 ° C.

Its large amount of green mass is significant for the agriculture as well, since it is an excellent green manure due to its high nitrogen content. Its 0,7 m diameter leaves are great animal feed because of its high protein and mineral content (9.5% protein, 15% nitrogen). A tree gives about 60 kg leaf weight.

Beekeepers love it because of its nectar producing flowers. It blooms already in the second year. Its purple (sometimes white), funnel-shaped, beautiful and very fragrant flower blooms nectar-rich for 6 weeks – it is an excellent bee-pasture. Its honey is light, slightly almond-tasting.

The tree planting density is 625 pieces/ha in 4x4 meters of bond with the purpose of energy, biomass, and 500 pieces/ha in 5x4 meters of bond with the purpose of timber production. The possible lumbering wood in 3-years cutting rounds – eight times in total during the 24 years of plantation life – is 0.4 m3/trunk i.e. 250 m3/ha of biomass, or in 8 years cutting rounds – three times in total during the 24 years of plantation life – is 1 m3/trunk, i.e. 500 m3/ha of timber.

The Paulownia tree is therefore a great opportunity, which is only waiting for confirmation. It is able to confront the complex problems of the Earth.

Use:

•        Biomass

•        timber

•        furniture industry

•        creating shelter-belts / protective zones with wheat, maize, cotton, millet

In summary:

•        Forest management is proposed for rural residents in order to protect the trees. The Emperor Tree and its hybrids are exquisitely suitable for this purpose.

•        The fastest-growing tree in the world.

•        It can reach up to 8 meters in height within 3 years.

•        The tree regenerates itself.

•        Excellent business opportunity, especially at local level or even at community level.

•        It is hard wood which is twice lighter than oak.

•        Its fire-resistant ability is two times higher than beech tree.

•        Has low moisture content.

•        Has good water resistance ability.

•        It is a good heat insulator.

•        Easy to dry. (Dries himself during about 30-60 days after cut-down)

•        Very easy to apply, workable.
